Territories of Urbanism

concepts of urbanists, conceptual shifts, elementary landscapes, epfl press, paola vigano, phantom of porosity, rethinking urbanism, territories of urbanism, urbanistsIn past years, with the terms descriptive, representative, or demonstrative project, I have attempted to indicate three main families of positions, whose presence I could recognize inside a wide-ranging debate (VIGANÒ 1994). These families made reference to three fundamental project dimensions, three unavoidable and omnipresent dimensions whose intensity, however, can vary remarkably in different moments, and from project to project: the descriptive, representative and demonstrative dimensions. At the start of the 1990s, the debate was mostly skewed towards the first two.

Where does it end? Is it unlimited? Does it have boundaries? How can we define space? A practical, yet precise definition of space is difficult to come up with. Let me give it a try, though: I would say that space includes all regions in the Universe where a free trajectory of a spacecraft, or of any natural object such as a planet, an asteroid or a comet, is possible, with no or with minimum braking force due to a drag-producing medium such as an atmosphere.

SustainCity project

18240716-ecology-concept--save-earth.jpgAs the rapid pace of urbanization has tilted the balance of the Earth's population to urban places, the challenges of planetary sustainability are increasingly likely to be addressed through efforts to make urban regions more sustainable. The research project emerged in response to an increasingly urgent need to develop analysis and decision-support tools that can assist local and regional governments in coordinating the planning of infrastructure investments and urban development to reduce their carbon footprint substantially, while assuring that their prosperity can grow efficiently and equitably.

Critical Mobilities

The deep transformations associated with the current phase of globalization have prompted scholars to search for new conceptual, theoretical, and methodological approaches to make sense of contemporary social (re)configurations. Most of the critical analyses of globalization within contemporary social theory share the assumption that our times are characterized by increasing mobility, so that “mobility has become a most suitable trope for our time, an era.

accelerating at what seems to be ever faster rates of speed”  The “new mobilities paradigm” , for instance, constitutes the most prominent of these sets of theoretical reflections.

Solar thermal technology in building

8993613-3d-illustration-of-men-installing-solar-panels.jpgAlthough the solar thermal technology is mature with competitive prices, it is not yet playing the important role it deserves in the reduction of buildings’ fossil energy consumption. The generally low architectural quality characterizing existing building integrations of solar thermal systems pinpoints the lack of design as one major reason for the low spread of the technology. As confirmed by the example of photovoltaics, an improvement of the architectural quality of building integrated systems can increase the use of a solar technology even more than price reductions and technical advances. As opposed to electricity produced by photovoltaics, heat is very sensitive to transportation losses. Therefore solar thermal collectors have to be mounted very near to the consumption place – i.e., on the building itself – making it even more urgent to correctly address the architectural integration issue.
